Goal

To promote the character traits of kindness and caring by having students select gifts and make cards to celebrate Mother's Day. Often my students have strained relationships with their families dues to the intense nature of their behavioral and emotional issues. I am hoping to increase positve feelings among family members, as well as allow my students to experience the joy of giving.

What will be done with my students

My students will have an opportunity to pick out a special present for their Mother, Grandmother, Aunt or other significant person who is caring for them and give it to her on Mother's Day. I will also have card making materials, as well as regular cards so they can write or draw a message to let their mother/mother figure know how they feel about them.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of doing this are numerous. First, by selecting a card and gift, I am hoping it will contribute to a more positive family dynamic. Additionally, it will give my students a chance to experience the joy of giving to others. Finally, the opportunity to give to others will have a tremendous effect on my students, as well as teaching them about empathy, kindness and caring.

Describe the Students

Many of my students are economically disadvantaged, demonstrate low academic performance, experience behavioral difficulties and mental health issues and a significant number live in single parent families or with other guardians (i.e. grandparents). My school receives Universal Free Lunch for students and is a Title I School. All of my students receive Exceptional Education Services (ESE) including services for students with Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairments and Occupational and Physical Therapy.
