Goal

My goal is to have a seat cushion for each student to use while we are gathered on the rug for instructional time for Language Arts.

What will be done with my students

Students learn the most through conversations with each other. Our curriculum reflects this by requiring students to communicate with accountable talk. Deep discussions about literature is a big part of my classroom. The best way to have conversations to increase learning is for us to be together. Because of this, we gather on the carpet area several times a day. As fifth graders, this is not always the most comfortable spot in the classroom. As a teacher who sits on the rug with my students, I know firsthand. The students will be using the seat cushions when we gather down on the rug to add comfort and help them focus. When we receive the seat cushions, we will implement them immediately and throughout the entire school year. They will be used several times a day by each of my 44 students.

Benefits to my students

By having students use seat cushions while on the rug, I expect to see an increase in student participation during class discussions and partner talk. Students will be more comfortable and able to focus on classroom discussions instead of being antsy to go back to their seats. Therefore, we can dig deeper into discussions. As a teacher, I will benefit by being able to monitor student learning as well as guide my students further into the curriculum. This will also help increase student achievement in the classroom.

Describe the Students

I teach two groups of students for ELA. I have about 44 students in total. I have 10 students with educational plans of either an IEP or 504. These students require redirection for focusing throughout the day. One of these students is on the spectrum and has a full time assistant. This student does use alternative seating already. From my two classes, students are split about evenly between high, low, and on grade level. Fifteen students are below level and received a 1 or 2 on the FSA in 4th grade. Fourteen of my students who received a 4 or 5 on the FSA and are above grade level. The remaining students are right at grade level.

Budget Narrative

The seat cushions come in packs of 4. Each 4-pack is $63.85. I need 6 sets of 4 to accommodate my both groups of students.
