The goal of this project is to take pictures of my students that reflect their achievements and successes at school. For example, when a student is "Citizen of the Month" which is based on a student's positive behavior, a picture is taken, displayed on a bulletin board at school and then sent home with the student. The purpose of this grant is to document student successes as they happen and give them tangible proof (pictures) of their accomplishments.

Goal

The goal of this project is to take pictures of my students that reflect their achievements and successes at school. For example, when a student is "Citizen of the Month" which is based on a student's positive behavior, a picture is taken, displayed on a bulletin board at school and then sent home with the student. The purpose of this grant is to document student successes as they happen and give them tangible proof (pictures) of their accomplishments.

What will be done with my students

Students will have their picture taken during positive events such as Citizen of the Month, Principals’ Breakfast, Honors Assembly, Running Club, Safety Patrol, as well as when they are engaged in positive activities such as reading, working in our garden, helping other students or staff, on their birthday, at Open House and on the first day of school. The pictures will be developed and then prominently displayed on bulletin boards throughout the school. As new pictures are taken, the old ones will be framed and given to the students to share with their families.

Benefits to my students

The students at Calvin Hunsinger School often experience poverty, turbulent home lives, single parent families, incarcerated family members, academic and behavioral struggles, mental health issues and a variety of other stressors. These life situations are often reflected in how the students view themselves, which is frequently in a negative manner. The goal is for my students to view themselves and school positively when they see their pictures on the boards. It is hoped that this will create more positive feelings about themselves and school, and as a result, they will attend school more regularly, improve their behavior at school, and increase the time they spend engaged in learning.
I have been taking pictures for several years now and the results are amazing!! At our Open House this year, every family that attended had their picture taken and the photos are displayed on our "Parent Involvement" bulletin board in the main office. Parents are thrilled with the pictures, and often ask for extra copies to share with relatives. Recently a student was given a copy of a photo when the bulletin board was redone. She politely said she did not need it since her grandmother already had the framed copy on her dresser in her bedroom. On a visit to a student's house a wall shelf displayed six framed photos taken at school. The student's mother called it her "Proud Shelf". I have personally seen how very meaningful the pictures are to both students and their families!

Describe the Students

Many of my students are economically disadvantaged, demonstrate low academic performance, experience behavioral difficulties and mental health issues and a significant number live in single parent families. Our school receives Universal Free Lunch for students and is a Title I School. All of my students receive Exceptional Education Services (ESE) including services for students with Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairments and Occupational Therapy.

Budget Narrative

Pictures will be developed (using coupons of course!), displayed, and then sent home with students.
