Goal

The goal is to have the necessary resources to fully implement Jan Richardson's Guided Reading program with all 3rd grade students to support each student to read on grade level text which in turn will have an impact on our overall FSA test scores as well as our school letter grade. We have been a C for the past couple of years and as a group of teachers we want to help our students achieve greater success.

What will be done with my students

It is an expectation that each third grade teacher do small guided reading groups during the Reading Block as well as during the daily 30 minute reading intervention block. Each third grade student is to be pulled into a guided reading group.

At this point our third grade teachers do not have the necessary guided reading books to support the instruction of our students. We need books on the student's reading level but also need several copies of a book to do the Jan Richardson Guided Reading Routine in a small group. This guided reading kit has 58 book titles (6 of each title) as well as the necessary supplies to do the guided reading lessons.

If the third grade teachers had the kit we would be able to pull students into the appropriate small group and follow the guided reading routine as written by Jan Richardson.

Benefits to my students

Both struggling and good readers will benefit from guided reading. Whole group instruction has its place in literacy programs but, whole group lessons are taught to the grade level standard. There are great benefits to students who are given the opportunity to have differentiated, teacher-led instruction in a small group setting.

During small group reading instruction, the teacher's goal is to assist students in developing an understanding of what they area reading, but to also encourage students to apply reading strategies they will need to become independent readers.

This kit will aide the teachers with using the assessments, selecting the right books, and following the Jan Richardson targeted lesson framework to reach every reader in our classrooms.
