Lealman Innovation Academy has a very diverse population with more than 80% of them coming from economically disadvantaged homes and the majority will be first-generation college students. All of our learners have dreams and goals, with many of them unsure of how to attain them due to lack of exposure. Lealman’s goal is to create a college and career-going culture by exposing our students to more opportunities that are available to each and every one of them with a focus on college access and career readiness. This project will provide them with the tools needed to fulfill these goals. Any award, even a partial award, would help us be able to lessen the cost per learner and ensure that no learner is left behind due to financial reasons.

Goal

Lealman’s goal is to create a college and career-going culture by exposing our students to more opportunities that are available to each and every one of them with a focus on college access and career readiness. What will be done with my students

While on this college tour, the learners are going to visit the University of South Florida in Tampa, Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, and also Florida Memorial University in Miami. While at the schools, the learners will: Attend sessions with the Career Centers and experience career assessment profiling; Meet with student services and financial aid and learn about the many pathways for getting into and financing college; and Meet with college professors and students who will share their educational journeys with our students. In addition to the academic focus, they will also tour the dorms, student centers, and even get to participate in a college football game so that they will also understand that attending college is a well-rounded experience.

Benefits to my students

Engaging in this college tour has the opportunity to bridge the gap by exposing our learners to new environments, cultures, and academic activities that are often not readily available for our learners. For many of our students, this will be their first time leaving the St. Petersburg area and ever seeing a college. They will see how other people in similar situations to theirs were able to go to college and achieve their goals. Our learners will be able to see first-hand examples of the steps that they too can take to get into college and learn how their academic career today ties into their academic future tomorrow.

Budget Narrative

We have sought additional funding through grants, award money, and Title 1 to provide for food, transportation, and other costs. Even with all of the money that we have raised the cost per learner is $125 with a total of 46 learners attending. Any award, even a partial award, would help us be able to lessen the cost per learner and ensure that no learner is left behind due to financial reasons.
