Goal

Our goal is to provide fifth grade gifted students with challenging and advanced real world problem sets that can be solved in different ways. Discussions about the various paths to solutions to these problems will help student develop mindsets that will support achievement in mathematics.

What will be done with my students

Students will work with advanced problem sets of real world problems that are focused on fifth and sixth grade math standards in collaborative groups. This work will accelerate and enrich our math curriculum.

Benefits to my students

Students will cover up to two years of math standards and develop critical thinking skills. Mastery of fifth and sixth grade standards will allow students to enroll in seventh grade advanced math in their sixth grade year.

Describe the Students

I have 44 fifth grade gifted students who attend a full time magnet program. My student are ethnically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse. Some students are dually exceptional, with learning challenges related to ADHD or ASD.

Budget Narrative

I would like to purchase 10 copies of the Big Ideas Course 1 book. This resource has outstanding problem sets of challenging word problems based on fifth and sixth grade math standards. My students love these challenging problems and enjoy solving them in teams.
