"Imagine an interactive circle of kids, all drumming together, holding a common pulse and weaving a facilitated rhythm into a cohesive musical experience.” Giving Tree Music is a production company that actually delivers everything they advertise. You will indeed experience “laughter, learning, and an increased mutual respect between teachers, students and their peers," just as they advertise on their website.
Many years ago, I originally experienced this wonderful event when I took my gifted students to a nursing home. I was so impressed with the high energy level of the instructor and how he exuded passion for his music while receiving 100% audience participation, that I booked him for my school.
Giving Tree Music truly feels that their program is not just about drumming. They “use the drums as a vehicle to build community and empower individuals to find their own true voice.” Sadly, many students do not find a level of academic success in school, and they feel truly free and happy when outside at PE, or creating in the art room, or performing at music. This production is the perfect vehicle to reach many children who learn through movement and/or music, which is one of the eight multiple intelligences. There are no other programs around that could remotely match the level of rich participation from students and adults alike. Gulf Beaches wants to use all creative means possible to motivate our students to raise test scores and learn at their highest potential.

What will be done with my students

Every grade level from kindergarten to 5th grade will learn some history of the drum, its origins, and cultural significance. Students will also learn the many sounds a drum can make along with some playing techniques.
These skills are only secondary to the magical experience children feel as they drum together as a community. They get the opportunity to lead the group in drumming, or make up a beat in which to dance!
Remarkably, every child gets his/her own drum. They each get the experience of relating to all of their classmates through music and movement.

Benefits to my students

Although our students come from a wide range of backgrounds, research tells us that music reaches all types. It inspires, motivates, and makes those synapses fire in the brain! This goes beyond the dreams of many children wanting to be in a band when they grow up. We hope to make some connections in their brains as they increase their abilities to follow a beat, create a new beat, learn a dance, or lead a group of peers. We want them energized, thinking creatively...firing up those synapses!
Research is inexhaustible for showing the benefits between music and learning. "The effects of music-mathematics integrated curriculum and instruction on elementary students' mathematics achievement and dispositions", Song An (2012 Doctoral Dissertation) found that "music students had statistically significantly higher scores on mathematics achievement after music intervention."
Leslie Merida- Gonzalez, in "Effect of a Music Education Intervention on Fifth-Grade Student's Ability to Learn Fractions" (2017), found "music-mathematics intervention proved to significantly improve the learning of fractions of fifth-grade students with, and without disabilities."
Cultural events such as this helps with stimulating students’ attention to detail (reading and following directions), as well as boosting motivation, critical thinking, and cooperative team performance, all vital skills for a successful elementary school career and beyond.

Describe the Students

There are 346 kindergarten through fifth grade students at Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School. This is our fourth year as the Center for Innovation and Digital Learning, a uniquely qualifying school for such an innovative program! Our students have come to us from all aspects of education: other public schools, home schooled, private schools, and charter schools. Among this population we have 1 ESOL student, 127 Exceptional Education students, including 90 gifted children, and 130 free/reduced lunch students.
57% of last year's students scored a 3 or better in reading and 56% earned a 3 or better in math.
Gulf Beaches teachers want to help the lower functioning children as well as the higher functioning make gains in academic subjects.

Budget Narrative

There is a $650 fee to Giving Tree Music for an all day event.
An extra $100 is for all staff members to experience this unique opportunity before or after school. After all, adults are learners too, and school staff members need some motivation and enrichment, too! Each child will need a permission slip/photo release which needs to be printed.
