Goal

The goal of this initiative is to provide students with the tools to interact with three journals on a daily basis: Language Arts, Math, and a Daily Calendar Journal.

What will be done with my students

Aligned with the Florida State Common Core, students will have three daily curriculum based interactions with their journals.

Language Arts:
Standards Addressed:
LAFS.K.W.1.1
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book.

LAFS.K.W.1.2
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

LAFS.K.W.1.3
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened.

Students will be asked to produce a daily journal entry that supports the curriculum that we are learning about/covering on that day. Students will be encouraged to develop their writing, grammar and use of sight words during this process.

Math:
Student will use their math journals to show their understanding of the math concept that was taught on that day. Their entry type will vary depending on the curriculum at that time. I envision picture entries, structured writing entries, as well as interactive cut and paste entries all reflecting their understanding of the curriculum.

Daily Calendar Journal:
This journal will be used as a daily warm up activity as students are entering the classroom and getting focused on learning. Students will be taught to fill out their daily calendar in addition to weather, birthday, and lost tooth graphs. Students will then answer the question of the day in their journal. I envision this to be in picture format as the year begins and then progress to sentences as the academic year progresses.

Benefits to my students

Students will be given and taught how to use a rubric to score and reflect on their individual entries. They will use the rubrics to gain further understanding of their individual academic growth.

During individual conferences, I will use the journal entries to reflect with the students on their progress. Having all of their entries in one journal will allow me to point out to student growth, development as well as individual understanding of the curriculum.

Describe the Students

Eisenhower Elementary School is located in a low socio-economic area of Clearwater Florida. The majority of the housing in this area is low income apartment complexes. In this years school ratings, Eisenhower Elementary School received a C.

The Kindergarten students I teach at Eisenhower Elementary School present themselves with multiple barriers to learning. Not only are their families economically disadvantaged, more that 50% of the students are in a single parent home. Statistics show that only 40% of the incoming Kindergarten students will graduate from 5th grade at Eisenhower Elementary. We have a very transient population making it difficult for these students to build community and connections with teachers and fellow students.

In addition, Eisenhower typically has a very high ESOL student population. In Kindergarten, this poses additional struggles for students as they are often afraid to speak because they are embarrassed or do not want to say something wrong.
The amazing part of my experience with these Kindergarten students is that they are generally great kids who really want to learn. They display effort and heart in the learning process. This allows me to teach and help them develop daily into great students and amazing little people.
