Goal

Our school is unique in that we engage all students in the Schoolwide Enrichment Model or SEM. We haven't been able to do this these last two years due to Covid-19 restrictions. My SEM cluster focus is architecture. The Invent Kit by Makedo has enough supplies that all students in the SEM cluster will be able to use parts of it in the formation of their products that reflect their learning about architecture. Furthermore, after SEM concludes, I can use the materials with my gifted and talent students until the startup of SEM again next year. 

 

What will be done with my students

Within the SEM cluster, students will be able to use the tools in the kit to construct with cardboard. While cardboard won't be the only material they have access to, it is the material designed to be used with the kit. The kit includes specially designed saws, screw drivers and screws, fold rollers and mini tools. All tools and materials are recommended for ages 5 and up and have a safety rating for 3+. Safety is crucially important, and these materials allow our students to be able design and create without limitations. Within gifted and talented the materials will be able to be used in Maker Space and various projects and challenges that change each year.  

 

Benefits to my students

Glue and tape can only take construction so far. This kit will provide our students with unlimited opportunities and allow their imaginations and plans to come life. It is not uncommon to have a student design an invention or create a plan for a project only to be upset when they discover that their abilities and the tools and materials available to them make bringing their ideas to life rather difficult. I want our students to be impressed and confident with their own ideas and abilities and I think that being able to use this kit will help kick start that path for many learners.  

 

Describe the Students

I currently have 17 gifted students, 49 talent students and will have a cluster of SEM (Schoolwide Enrichment Model) students. This means that this one kit has the power to benefit about 80 students at our school throughout the year. My students are curious learners who love to engage via hands on learning. The "do" aspect is so important for them to be able to test their ideas and create. My SEM cluster students will be a mix of students in ages, grades and abilities who all share in interest in architecture. My gifted and talented students are high performers who routinely are presented challenges in which they must use their skills, knowledge and social know how to navigate.
