The goal is to start a community garden with planters, seeds, and tools that students, staff, and teachers can use. There will be separate garden areas for mindfulness, science, and reading that align with the school's plan for behavior management and overall proficiency. The garden would be a space for students to practice and enrich skills they are learning in class and connect these skills to hands-on, real life experiences. Students will be able to practice hands-on science skills including plant and animal life cycles, plant parts, measuring weather, etc. This space will give students a chance to experience science concepts that they otherwise may not have access to, which will improve FSA science test scores and practical knowledge. The garden will also serve as a reward for students who read a certain amount at home, increasing literacy and love for reading.

What will be done with my students

Students will be able to be part of a garden club, and classes will be able to sign up to help take care of the garden. Students will be growing produce that families can take home. Students throughout the school who need extra behavioral support will be guided toward the mindfulness area of the garden, where there will be room for reflective walks, a butterfly garden, and a mindful movement space. Science teachers will be able to request time in the science garden to work with their class on specific topics.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn hands-on math and science skills, while also learning the importance of a whole and varied diet. They will learn skills that will help them take care of their bodies and the planet. Students will be introduced to foods and ways of eating that might not otherwise be accessible to them. The mindfulness area will help students process tough emotions and learn self-regulating strategies to decrease behavior incidents and improve learning conditions.

Describe the Students

My school is a Title I school in a high poverty area. 100% of our school population is considered Economically Disadvantaged based on our FRL rate.
Of our 397 students, 90.1% receive free and reduced lunch. 88.2% students are Black, 6% Hispanic, 3% Multiracial, 2.5% White. 82 of our current scholars have an ESE label. The garden would be accessible to all students.

Budget Narrative

This budget would cover the initial costs of beginning the garden. Money for planters would involve the raw materials and tools required to build the planters. After that is covered, the next steps would be the soil and seeds. Gardening tools would include enough shovels, watering cans, and shears for multiple students to use at a time.
