To offset the costs of bus transportation for my students who will be attending the Hamilton Education Program at the Straz Center in Tampa. My original bus vendor now says they have no record of my request. I am having to use another vendor, and it will cost approximately $650 more than the initial quote.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 57

Fifty seven Clearwater High School students had the opportunity to see the smash Broadway hit, Hamilton. The Hamilton Education Program (HEP) is a full day event. Prior to the performance, each student had to create a performance piece (poem, monologue, song, rap, etc.) based on primary sources from the Founding of our country. From these projects, each school chose their best and submitted it in video format to the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, who was sponsoring the program. There were approximately 25 schools chosen to attend the HEP in Tampa. Of those 25, about a dozen were chosen to perform on the main stage of the Straz Center. We were delighted when two of our students, Alexia and Graceanna, were chosen to perform their original song. After the performances, the students participated in a question and answer session with the Hamilton cast. Next, we had lunch in a waterfront park, on a beautiful spring day. Finally, at 1 pm, the curtain rose for our performance of Hamilton! The students were in awe! At intermission, they told me they had goosebumps and were totally invested in the play! The students not only learned how to analyze primary sources, but also used their creativity and best of all, they got to experience a Broadway show! this was a day they'll never forget!  We are so thankful to our donors who made this day possible.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To offset the costs of bus transportation for my students who will be attending the Hamilton Education Program at the Straz Center in Tampa. My original bus vendor now says they have no record of my request. I am having to use another vendor, and it will cost approximately $650 more than the initial quote.

What will be done with my students

The Hamilton Education Program enables high school students to attend a special performance of the smash Broadway musical, Hamilton. Hamilton is based on the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of our Founding Fathers. Students are able to purchase tickets at the discounted rate of $10 each - a "Hamilton"! However, there's a catch! In order to attend, students must create a performance based project derived from Founding Era primary source documents. It's an opportunity for them to literally make history come to life!

Benefits to my students

Students will learn to read and analyze primary source documents.

Students will gain a greater understanding of our founding documents such as the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, and more.

They will learn more about the people who founded our country - their backgrounds, their motivations - and the reasons why they set up our government in the manner in which they did!

Students will attend a Broadway musical. For many, this will be their first exposure to professional performing arts.

Describe the Students

Approximately 61% of the students at Clearwater High receive free/reduced lunch.
Approximately 18% of my students receive Exceptional Student Education services.
Approximately 17% of my students are English Language Learners.
