As I look around at how much we are asking day in and day out of the students in our classrooms, our goal is create a functional learning environment that promotes engagement and productivity. I hope to create a space where learners can collaborate and problem solve. I also hope to add a bit of fun and comfort to our otherwise traditional desk setting.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 19

After being gifted this flexible seating grant, I was able to purchase two large classroom rugs, wobble chairs and ball chairs for my classroom.  With the addition of these items to my classroom, my students were able to enjoy the flexibility of additional varied seating options.  By offerring varied seating options for my students, I watched engagement, focus, excitement, and collaboration blossom in my room.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

As I look around at how much we are asking day in and day out of the students in our classrooms, our goal is create a functional learning environment that promotes engagement and productivity. I hope to create a space where learners can collaborate and problem solve. I also hope to add a bit of fun and comfort to our otherwise traditional desk setting.

What will be done with my students

By introducing flexible seating into our classroom, the students will be required to make decisions about where they work best, who they work best with, and how they prefer to work. Students will be required to work together in groups and find quiet spaces to work independently.

My goal is to slowly implement all of the seating options permanently by the end March of this school year. Once the seating options are available they will be utilized by classes year after year.

Benefits to my students

By utilizing flexible seating options in our classroom, there are many benefits! These benefits include but are not limited to..
*open collaboration / communication
*problem solving
*increased motivation
*improved overall posture
*improved core strength
*opportunities of physical activity / movement which is directly linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior
*increased focus for students who have ADD / ADHD or have sensory issues

Describe the Students

As with every classroom across our nation, I have students with varying needs from remediation to enrichment. Students who need constant support and others who are independently motivated.

I have 4 students who have ADD, ADHD, and or sensory issues. For these students there is a constant need for movement.
