What will be done with my students

All students in grades PreK-5th, have the opportunity to be nominated by their teachers each month. The students that are nominated are students who excel and are exemplary role models in each specific monthly character traits. Students who portray the characteristic of the monthly trait are invited to a breakfast in their honor. They have their picture taken, it is displayed for the month. The whole school views these pictures in the cafeteria and it allows all the other students to try to achieve to be the next Citizen of the Month. The chosen students receive a certificate, a bag of school supplies, coupons, a Paw print button and a water bottle. This is a huge morale building experience for the students of our school.
We try to boost self-esteem and encourage children to be confident. We began the school year with a school-wide assembly on the PE court; BAAM--behavior, attendance, academics, motivation. This program was put in play to excite the whole school to be their very best! The excitement is school-wide, as every student wants to be "The Citizen of the Month." They want the pride for themselves and for the teacher that nominated them. Many of our students portray the characteristics without being aware and are humbled as they are acknowledged. Many are shy , timid and withdrawn students who struggle with acceptance, self- motivation, and academics, but are sweet and lovely children who are overshadowed by outgoing, social and academic students. This is a program that enables all children to rise to the occasion for what they bring.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of this monthly program enables students to be honored and represented for their citizenship in their class and throughout the school. It enables all children to represent a specific characteristic that might pertain to them individually; Honesty, Respect, Motivation, Responsibility, Citizenship, Cooperation, Kindness, Tolerance.
Most of these children have never been placed on a pedestal for their accomplishments. We want to change that. We want to portray the positive qualities and character traits that our students possess and not focus just on academics, while academics are very important, we believe that every child is unique in a special way and should be acknowledged. All children deserve to feel proud and be honored as such. There are many children that have wonderful characteristics that deserve to be addressed and with this program it enables those children to be honored.

Describe the Students

Our school is a Title 1 school, 100% free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Our school consists of high poverty, low income families, many who have experienced homelessness, abuse and extreme trauma in their lives. These children who are chosen each month for their special talents find pride and acceptance, many for the first time in their lives. This program services approximately 350 students through the year.

Budget Narrative

I am excited to be able to honor the children who are nominated each month with this wonderful program. It is my honor to help boost these children and make them feel special. Their picture is displayed for the whole school to view, and a bag of treasures that honors them. Each child that receives this monthly honor receives these special items in their honor. Many of our Lealman students do not receive or have special things that they can call their own. It would be a shame not to be able to treat these special children with a gift that honors them. Each year it gets harder and harder to supply these items to the children. With the help of this grant it would make my dream for these children more realistic.
