Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 85

The materials purchased allowed my students and other classrooms to use a more hands on approach to learning math.  We used materials in a "play" mode during our daily recess to allow students to interact with math skills in a real world way to build interest and understanding.  Students interacted with peers to determine how to create and build to increase understanding then were more prepared with background experiences and knowledge when moving into classwork and testing situations.  Thank you for your involvement in our learning.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is that my students will gain a better understanding of taking ownership of their learning. We will work with the understanding, that the harder we work and learn, the more money we can make. Putting in our best pays off

What will be done with my students

The students will have opportunities throughout the day to work independently or in partnerships in order to strengthen skills learned in the classroom. Using our Progression of Learning Scales to help determine what has been learned and what still needs to be learned, the students will have a plan to help guide them and to take ownership of their learning, therefore increasing their scores throughout subject areas. When a student has worked up to their greatest potential, they have an opportunity to get paid for their efforts with our "Bobcat Bucks".

Benefits to my students

As students learn the importance of hard work and a job well done, they will be rewarded by "making more money". As they earn their "Bobcat Bucks", they will be able to make financially responsible decisions on how to spend their money on items from our school store. Equally as important, they will learn the benefit of saving over time in order to purchase a desired larger item.
Grant items will be shared with other first grade classes to offer the benefit to a total of 4 classes

Describe the Students

Currently I have about 50% of my students below level. I have 15% ESOL and 10% ESE, including a blind student, all of which need the hands on applications that would be possible through this grant.

Budget Narrative

I am requesting funding for items that students can use as "center" time learning opportunities to allow for extra practice in skill areas needed to support curriculum areas. The above items would be used to cover differentiated skill levels throughout the year.
