The goal of this math centered financial literacy project is to immerse students with the idea and concepts of financial literacy and how it can impact them in the real-world. Research has stated that young adults face larger levels of debt and underemployment, live paycheck to paycheck, need help from their families, and have little to no savings. The sooner students know how to handle money wisely, the sooner they can apply their knowledge. Each year, in the gifted classroom, a thematic unit is taught and content is connected to real-world application. This grant would allow financial literacy come alive in my classroom through collaborative work, high-energy learning, critical thinking skills, and hands-on learning.

Goal

What will be done with my students

Each grade level will learn about financial literacy in a different way.
2nd & 3rd Grade students will focus on an Interact learning unit called “Money Masters: an interaction unit in which students learn to count and make change”. Students will build and learn how to master counting and making change through a banking scenario. Each team will be responsible for working well as a team, learn the 4 and 5 step process for making change, and keep track of their progress through the use of charts.
4th & 5th grade students will focus on the Interact learning unit called “It’s Your Future: will you survive financially?” This real-world simulation encourages advanced thinking about the financial realities such as independent living with math essentials. Students will begin by learning about independent living including rent, security deposits, car payments, TV and internet services, eating out and utilities.
Upon the completion of the 4th & 5th grade unit, students will take the knowledge they have learned and embark on a journey of their own. Students will be asked to plan a vacation to a rainforest of their choice (based on what they have learned). Aligning with our thematic unit, the rainforest, students will be given a character card including the following information: job wage, budget, and additional that will inform help determine what they are able to spends. Within this challenge students will need to determine the cost of flying to their location hotels or places to stay, food, transportation, leisure activities, etc. Based on their information they will create a whole vacation and present their information with the class.
This unit will hit multiple state standards as well as gifted standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7.

Benefits to my students

The students in my classroom will benefit from this interactive stimulation because it will show them real-world application and actively engage in the materials through hands-on learning. Students will have a clear understanding of the components of financial literacy and steps they need to take in order to be successful as an adult. Although this is going to be taught to elementary age students, it is never too early to instill understanding, knowledge, and good habits.

Describe the Students

The students who would benefit from these materials are AMAZING! They are kind, curious, and willing to learn. They desperately look forward to the gifted day and want to know when the next engaging activity will occur. They come with an eagerness to learn! I only want to provide many more of these opportunities to my students. As of right now there are 48 students ranging from grades K-5. This number will continue to grow as more gifted students enter my classroom throughout the year. We are a low income school with free and reduced lunch and breakfast for all students. The students would appreciate and be thankful for any donations and materials that allow them to have fun while learning.
