Impact to My Classroom

The Typhoon H Hex-copter is a far more complex UA system than the other drones that our STEM After School Program participants had available to fly.  Once our students had shown the competency necessary to take command of the drone they logged approximately 15 hours of flight time with it. 

 

Since this drone is in a completely different size class and complexity, we were able to give students direct experience with maneuvering, photography and videography for commercial purposes with a commercial grade sUAS.

 

This year we had 26 different students come through our program, with 17 of them being regular attendees.  The drone has also brought attention to our program this year and helped bring legitimacy to our efforts.  The result has been that enough interest has been shown so that we are now going to add the drone academy course as part of our regular class schedule next year.  That class will produce 2 separate industry certifications in Drone Safety, and Operation.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of the PCS STEM Academy program is to increase student achievement by engaging students in innovative science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The implementation of drones in the Azalea Middle School STEM Academy will increase student knowledge in the areas of drone operation, current and future drone interface with the National Airspace System, and current and future roles for the use of drones in commercial enterprises and first responder operations while engaging them in real life, hands-on experience in the execution of flight missions. 

 

What will be done with my students

Students will be instructed on FAA regulations, best practices, national airspace, weather, crew resource management, and emerging drone technology. In addition, students will be engaged through hands on experience, working on drone flight teams as the pilot in command, operating the flight controls, and as a visual observer while planning and executing flight missions utilizing a commercial grade drone. The course will culminate in a research projects exhibition that will ask students to envision future drone applications based on their own flight experiences along with current and expected advancements in drone technology. Student progress and achievement will be gauged through formal and informal assessments of concept knowledge, the quality of information provided on their final project, and through the demonstration of acquired, basic flight skills.  

 

Benefits to my students

The creation of the PCS STEM Academy program for Pinellas County Schools provides a solution to addressing STEM content through the use of an extended school day. Students participating in the PCS STEM Academies become immersed in STEM based activities every other week for 120 minutes for a duration of 13 weeks.

The Pinellas County Schools Assessment, Accountability and Research Department conducted an analysis on the impact of STEM Academy participation on state science and math assessments (NGSSS Science EOC Performance and Math FSA) within the Pinellas County School District.
• The odds of a student who is enrolled in a STEM ELP course passing the NGSSS Science EOC is 3.68 times greater than that of a student who is not enrolled in a STEM ELP course.
• The odds of a student who is enrolled in a STEM ELP course passing the FSA Math is 2.13 times greater than that of a student who is not enrolled in a STEM ELP course.
This STEM Academy hosted at Azalea Middle School will immerse students in the knowledge of aviation and drone systems and technologies. The hands-on component will serve to fully engage students while cultivating a complete understanding of the abilities and constraints of actual drone flight. The coursework will include cross curricular learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, reading, writing, and art.
 

 

Describe the Students

Azalea Middle School is a Title (I) school, therefore serving a large population of students that come from low socioeconomic homes and backgrounds. Our population is diverse and includes children with special needs. Recruiting for this STEM Academy will be done with the mindset of involving more female students in STEM related fields of study. Students from our school would not have this type of drone technology available in their homes and would not otherwise have an opportunity to learn through the experience of flying a commercial grade quadcopter. The number of students impacted will be 20 for the first year, however, the drone equipment and curriculum purchased this year will continue to be used for the same purpose in subsequent years

Funds in the amount of $996.57, will be used to purchase (1) DJI Phantom 4 quadcopter drone, (1) extra DJI Battery pack, (3) 64 GB – Class 10 memory cards and shipping.
