KORE stool wobble chairs increase student engagement and time on task by allowing students to wiggle and move as they work. KORE stools also help students develop much needed core strength by encouraging balance and stability in a moving work environment. Currently in my classroom, I have several options for flexible seating. One choice that I have is small stools that I purchased from IKEA. Over the last two years, I have watched my students try to balance on one leg of these stools and end up falling over or having the stool fly out from under them! No matter how much I warn them, they just want to move. The KORE wobble stool is the solution to this problem! The stool allows students to tip and lean without the danger of tipping over.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 44

My students love the Kore wobble stools. They have given my students more opportunity to move their bodies while staying in their assigned seats. I have flexible seating in my room, and the kids are allowed to choose their seat when they come in. My kids with extra energy usually choose these seats first. The Kore wobble stools allow my students much more freedom to control their environment. I am hoping to get more in the future!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

KORE stool wobble chairs will be implemented as an additional option in my flexible seating classroom. Students are able to choose their working seats at any time as long as they are on task and making good choices. In the beginning of each school year, I encourage my students to "test out" all of the different seating options to find which ones they feel are most comfortable for them. I allow students to move to different seats as they feel necessary. Having the KORE wobble stools will give students a safe alternative to traditional stools.

Benefits to my students

According to the KORE Kids advertisement, "Ergonomically designed, the Kore™ Wobble Chair transforms the conventional boring seat into a playground for your child’s imagination. The innovative Kore™ Wobble Chair encourages active sitting and allows one’s knees, hips and back to find comfortable and ever-changing positions." These stools also give high energy students an outlet for excess movement, while still focusing on work. Many times, my ADHD students want to use the exercise balls or small stools, but end up falling off of them. Kore stools have an anti-roll feature to help prevent tipping over, and also have a textured base that prevents damage to the floor. Having the KORE stools in my classroom will give my students more options for sitting during work time.

Describe the Students

I teach two classes of Language Arts at a Title I school. Each class has approximately 22 students. My classes usually consist of ESE students, students with 504 plans (usually with accommodations for ADHD/ADD), and ESOL students as well as traditional students. My classroom is sensory-friendly with several different seating options that I have personally purchased, such as high café tables and stools, exercise balls, bungee chairs, small stools, lowered seating with floor pillows, and traditional chairs. I have also purchased fluorescent light covers for my ceiling lights to minimize eye strain. My students and families always comment on the calming atmosphere in my classroom.
