Goal

The goal of this grant is to increase student knowledge of how music can affect a city's culture by traveling to and learning from professional musician-educators from around the country. The funds provided would create a real-world experience for students who have learned about jazz through books and performance.

What will be done with my students

During the proposed field trip, students will travel first to Tallahassee to deepen their technical knowledge of jazz. They will participate in private lessons, masterclasses, and performances with university professors and other professional musicians.

After receiving the technical knowledge, students will travel to New Orleans, Louisiana to explore the historical events that led to the creation of jazz and the cultural impact the musical genre had on an entire city. They will visit several museums, including the New Orleans Jazz Museum and the National World War II Museum.

Benefits to my students

Students have an opportunity to be much more engaged in their learning by taking a trip full of hands-on opportunities. By working with music professors, the students will have a chance to discuss the pathways to attending college.

Visiting museums and historical sites in New Orleans will allow students to find connections between music and their other school subjects, noticing how major historical events impact every aspect of a country.

Following the trip, students will be able to discuss the cultural and historical background of pieces of music they have performed.
