Goal

The goal of this grant program is to improve reading and comprehension by continuing to provide our pre-K and kindergarten students, as they are beginning their learning careers, with real-world experiences that they can then read about in our classrooms.

What will be done with my students

We propose to utilize the funding provided by this grant to schedule a series of field trips during the academic year for our pre-K and Kindergarten students, much as we were able to do with the help of Sember grant funding during the last school year. Those field trips will be tied to their curriculum so as they begin to learn about a subject, they will also be able to experience it.

Field trips my include a visit to a farm, a trip to Tampa Bay Watch to learn about the marine environment that surrounds St. Petersburg, a visit to one of St. Petersburg’s world-renowned museums, a trip to an airport, a visit to the railroad museum in Manatee County, or as simple as a walk downtown St. Petersburg. We have been fortunate to have been a recipient of a Sembler grant before and have been able to utilize the funds for field trips that enriched their learning experience.

Benefits to my students

Central to achieving a quality education is the goal to have all children able to read at grade level by third grade. Mastery of reading skills must begin prior to the kindergarten years as children are exposed to the world around them and begin to translate that exposure to their understanding of the printed word.

For many children in our school, their world is limited to the distance between their homes and their classroom. Many families lack transportation or the means to take their children places and provide them experiences that many of us take for granted. These experiences can include a simple walk on a nature trail, or seeing farm animals in a pasture, walking down a city street, or even walking down the aisles of a grocery store. Lack of experience with the larger community and the world beyond their homes and our school creates a major impediment to their understanding of even the most elementary of reading material.

Funding from a Sembler partner was utilized during the last school year to take our children to a farm where many of them saw and interacted with animals that they had previously seen only in pictures. What was amazing was that many of their parents who chaperoned the trip had also never had these experiences so the trip was a multi-generational learning experience.

Describe the Students

Campbell Park Elementary School is home to more than 660 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten-5th. The school’s population is approximately 87% African American and more than 90% are eligible for free lunch. Free breakfast and an after-school meal are also available to our students.

Budget Narrative

The primary expense for these field trips is private transportation via commercial bus rental as school buses are rarely available during the hours we require transportation. Many of the locations we plan to visit do not charge admission, or make reduced admissions available to educators.
