Goal

The goal of this grant is to provide powerful small group literacy instruction in a way that should engage struggling students. This should increase their proficiency in reading, while decreasing or eliminating the gap between their current reading level and their expected reading level for a 3rd grade student.

What will be done with my students

Using this Literacy Footprints kit students will engage in researched based small group lessons written by literacy expert Jan Richardson. These small groups will provide differentiated teaching and learning opportunities to the diverse learners in my classroom. A range of assessment tools will also be utilized to determine students’ strengths and deficits. This data will be used to place them into small groups that meet their unique instructional needs. This kit will allow me to focus precisely on what my students need to learn in order to advance. The included texts will provide students with challenges, as well as enough support to read it with a high degree of accuracy. Through the use of guided reading and writing this kit can help students learn to problem solve, decode, and deeply comprehend more and more challenging materials. Furthermore the colorful engaging text and scaffolded lessons provided in this guided reading intervention kit can help motivate students to become independent learners who love and want to read.

Benefits to my students

The main benefit of this kit is that it is a researched based program that will help teach children how to read and write. Students will be met at their individual level and be challenged to make progress while encountering sequenced, high-quality leveled texts in many different genres. Students will be highly engaged in traditional tales, realistic fiction, fantasy, and informational text. The lesson plans also include ideas to support ESOL students (English Speakers of other Languages). Furthermore I have an assistant that can team with me to deliver more small group instruction using this kit than another classroom may be able to.

Describe the Students

The Students Targeted for Achievement, Recognition, and Success Program, STARS is a prevention/remediation program. It is designed to meet the academic and developmental needs of students who are not making satisfactory progress in school. My classroom currently has 19 low performing students, based on their scores from the previous year. Currently three of these students are ESE, one is ESOL and others are in the response to intervention process.
