For many of our children, their world is limited to the distance between their homes and our school, as their families lack transportation or the means to provide their children with experiences beyond their own homes and neighborhoods. Experiences that many of us take for granted, like walking on the beach, seeing farm animals in a pasture, walking down a city street, or even walking down the aisles of a grocery store, are foreign to many of our children. Lack of experience with the larger community and the world beyond their homes and our school creates a major impediment to their understanding of even the most elementary of reading material.

Objective

Quite simply, our objective is to improve reading and comprehension by providing our pre-K and kindergarten students, as they are beginning their learning careers, with real-world experiences that they can then read about in our classrooms.

What will be done with my students

Our school currently lacks funding to take our children beyond our school walls and our neighborhood to gain the real-world knowledge they need to understand their reading materials. For that reason, we propose to utilize the funding provided by this grant to schedule a series of field trips during the academic year for our pre-K and Kindergarten students. Those field trips will be tied to their reading curriculum so as they begin to read about a subject, they will also be able to experience it.

Field trips my include a visit to a farm, a trip to Tampa Bay Watch to learn about the marine environment that surrounds St. Petersburg, a visit to one of St. Petersburg’s world-renowned museums, a trip to an airport, a visit to the railroad museum in Manatee County, or as simple as a walk downtown St. Petersburg.

Benefits to my students

To improve reading and comprehension by providing our pre-K and kindergarten students, as they are beginning their learning careers, with real-world experiences that they can then read about in our classrooms

Describe the Students

Located in south St. Petersburg, in the shadow of Tropicana Field, Campbell Park Elementary School is home to more than 660 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten-5th. The school’s population is 87% African American and more than 90% are eligible for free lunch. Free breakfast and an after-school meal are also available to our students.

Budget Narrative

The primary obstacle to providing real-world experiences for our younger children is lack of transportation. Many of our parents don't drive or do not have vehicles and our school does not have a budget for bus transportation. This grant will allow us to provide funds to our pre-K and Kindergarten teachers for that field trip transportation and, potentially, other expenses that may be required.
