Students will have the opportunity to prepare recipes each week. They will be learning a variety of safe, adaptive cooking techniques. The cooking classes are essential for students to learn in order to gain confidence and remain independent.

What will be done with my students

Food Preparation:

* Students will participate in pre-cooking skills: measuring, chopping, dicing, peeling, pouring separating.
*Students will practice safe techniques for using the microwave and conventional oven.
* Students will select nutritious recipes.
*Students will follow a full curriculum of other activities including: kitchen organization, table setting, eating skills, and clean-up procedures.

Benefits to my students

The food preparation classes are beneficial for students to help them remain independent in their homes, apartments, and group homes. Some students may find supportive employment in the restaurant and food industry in the community with their classroom experience.

Describe the Students

My students are developmentally and intellectually challenged. Students range in age from 25- 72years. The Adults With Disabilities Program is a partnership between UPARC (Upper Pinellas Association Of Retarded Citizens) and Pinellas County Schools. My classes support the UPARC Mission: To Support and Empower Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities.

Budget Narrative

The $600.00 budget will cover consumable ingredients for meal preparation. All food items will be used for classroom instruction and relate to the program mission and grant. My program s funded through a state grant, through the Department of Education. The teacher's salary is funded, however, due to past years budget cuts, additional funding is not provided to buy supplies for cooking classes.
