To provide high-interest and diverse books to all students that they choose to take home with them. This goal will help with our library and literacy goals, hopefully increasing student data and standard-tied outcomes.
There are several studies on how the number of books in homes has a correlation with student literacy success, from a general gaining interested in reading to even increasing gains in standardized testing. "Findings published in the journal Social Science Research show that raising a child in a home filled with books positively impacts her future academic growth and job attainment. Specifically, as Pacific Standard reported, the study found that when it comes to standardized tests, 'Regardless of how many books the family already has, each addition to the home library helps children do better.'" From the studies, it seems that gains plateau around 80-100 books. Obviously, financially we can't support our whole school of 1400+ students to have 80-100 books each, but we can start somewhere. Also, there are even more studies on the benefits of student choice on literacy skill gains. We have combined these two initiatives to create our goal of obtaining a large supply of books that the whole school, most importantly our 400+ students who are economically disadvantaged, can choose from and take home to start or add to their budding home library collections.
Students will take more accountability in their literacy journey. Students will read these books that they chose and increase their love of reading, as well and literacy skills. Students will understand the school has a vested interest in obtaining literature that reflects their interests and diversity, being culturally relevant. The school culture of literacy will improve as this is a whole-school initiative.
I am able to obtain new books from an wholesale average price of $3 each. We are already starting to have a stockpile of books, so this will add to our current storage. This would add a variety of 600+ new books, including shipping/handling. Books would be selected for their age-appropriateness, cost, availability, interest/genre, and reviews.
