The Morning Show at Hunter’s Green Elementary is technically not part of the curriculum but an enrichment classroom. Therefore, some equipment has by necessity been neglected in its upkeep. The main camera has just failed in our school and the backup camera is beginning to have distortions. The equipment needs to be replaced to continue to deliver a morning show.

A good camcorder will allow the students to create short videos for school assignments such as for Tropicana Speech, short clips for the SLAM program, and to promote events happening around our school.

How Project Benefits Students

Morning announcements are an important part of a school’s activities. It is a mechanism to assist children in organizing their day and give them a sense of community. The Morning Show starts the students’ day with the Pledge of Allegiance, Star-Spangled banner, Panther Pledge and proceeds to provide general announcements and reminders about school academic opportunities and upcoming social functions. The morning show can also have a calming effect on students. Moises Roman of the UCLA Early Care & Education Department has stated that routines decrease anxiety in children1. The Morning Show serves to organize the start of the academic day and let’s children know ahead of time of any changes or specific events in the upcoming days. Educational Leadership teams have gone so far as to state “morning announcements are a proven way to set the tone for the day and build morale and a sense of school ‘community’.”2 Our school is also using the song “We are the Champions” every morning to set the tone by cheerleading hard work and perseverance.

The morning show crew takes their roles as journalists very seriously. They meet once a week to gain knowledge about producing the Show. They get to school early every day to report to the Morning Show to set it up. They pride themselves on making a quality show, showcasing what is going on from box top collections to school events. This grant would allow students to continue to learn about digital journalism.

Expected Outcome(s)

This grant not only affects the students that are on the morning show crew but the overall Morning Show is presented to the school every morning. New camcorders will have battery life allowing the students to film outside of the studio. Our current cameras are ineffective for two reasons. One no longer works, and the other produces flickering video. Two, they turn off as soon as they are removed from their power source due to the age of their batteries. If awarded this grant, the Morning Show can continue, clearer quality will be available, and more mobile stories will be presented.

Detailed Cost Summary

We considered cameras ranging from low to high-end, but a certain quality of camera is needed to last for a minimum of 5 years with good HD video and clear image. Camcorders with Bluetooth capabilities provide easy control for the students. Most Canon cameras built after 2016 have the Bluetooth capabilities.

The Camcorders can be found at Hunts Photo and Video which is a HCPS approved vendor
