My goal is to help my students with speech and language impairments to be able to express themselves verbally, with rich vocabulary and elaborate details. My desire is to be able to provide my students with the tools necessary to be successful not only in the therapy room, but in the school and home environment.

As a speech-language pathologist, I provide therapy to students from preschool through fifth grade, ranging from a variety of disabilities, including speech impairments, language impairments, autism, learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, etc. Several of the students struggle with expressive language skills, such as verbally expressing their wants and needs, producing complete sentences, and using appropriate vocabulary. My goal is to improve the students’ expressive language and describing skills, because strong oral language skills are required to be able to organize information while speaking, writing, and understanding information when reading.

How Project Benefits Students

The project targets improving students’ language and communication skills through the use of The Expanding Expression Tool Kit. This program is a multi-sensory approach to building on language skills, such as defining and describing, written expression, providing similarities and differences, along with skills that the students need to be successful in the classroom. The tool can be used for general descriptions, writing from prior knowledge, autobiographies/biographies, summarizing, and more.

Expected Outcome(s)

It is expected that through the use of this program, students will significantly improve their expressive language skills. They will be able to describe words using rich vocabulary, speak in grammatically correct sentences, describe similarities and differences, and categorize items. Improved language skills will increase the students’ academic abilities, specifically in the area of language arts. This kit is an excellent tool that will be used with multiple students year after year.
