Project Goal

We have had a rudimentary MakerSpace for our students using used donated art and Lego materials. It is our goal to provide a wider selection of materials for our students who have an interest in engineering, coding, science and other career fields that a MakerSpace kit will provide.

How Project Benefits Students

Students benefit greatly from engaging in activities that enlarge their learning experiences and activate their creativity and critical thinking. A MakerSpace that provides a variety of materials and tools supports the learning of our student in an individualized manner by connecting with each students’ passion and interest. The variety of materials in the maker kit will also provide opportunities of learning for students who have yet to discover their passion. Working with multiple tools will help students connect with their interest and open a door to a future career. Artists, Engineers, Mathematicians, and Scientists will have access to materials they need to explore and grow. The MakerSpace kit will be made available to our students immediately and will become an integrated part of our permanent MakerSpace area. Students have access to the MakerSpace before school, during lunch, and during the school day with a pass from their teacher. Teachers can also schedule to bring their whole classes to use the MakerSpace materials to enrich their curriculum.

Expected Outcome(s)

Students who engage in MakerSpace Stem activities, especially when those activities match their own personal interest, develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the complexities of their chosen focus. They strengthen their problem solving and collaborative skills as they work in groups. As these skills strengthen, students will be better equipped to engage is classwork and assessments, which will increase their academic success. All the students at our school, grades 6-8, have access to our MakerSpace.
