The goal of this project is to increase the amount of bright and cheerful ringing of handbells both in our general music classroom and in the extracurricular handbell choirs. Due to growing student interest to participate in our school's handbell choir(s), we need additional bells to accommodate our inspired musicians.

I will use these new handbell instruments as hands-on resources to teach standards MU.3.O.1.1, MU.3.O.1.2, MU.3.O.3.1, MU.3.S.2.1, MU.3.F.3.1, MU.4.C.2.2, MU.4.C.2.1, where the students will identify elements in musical works, perform and understand how a change in musical elements can affect and alter the mood of the music, identify the patterns in the music that will assist them in sequencing the form through their performance, and describe & analyze performance techniques that will enhance their own performance.

Project Goal

How Project Benefits Students

Handbells are easily usable teaching tools for elementary music education since each handbell corresponds to a specific pitched note on composed sheet music.  Handbells especially work well with elementary students because it requires just enough fine and gross motor skills to make a bell sound great, which increases the success rate of each student musician. When students feel successful, they want to continue developing and honing their skills. The complexity of instruction occurs when the student masters the particular rhythmic timing of when to ring their assigned bell within the larger ensemble. Handbells only need to be tuned every 20-25 years, so the students can experience joyful music making immediately while mastering multiple standards based concepts including time signatures, harmony, chords, rhythm, melodic progressions, and key changes.

Our school has two thriving, extracurricular handbell choirs with an interest in adding a third ensemble. We would like to expand the handbell choirs due to interest and these bells will set us on a course to increase the number of student participants in the current ensembles, as well as growing the number of students that can be added to the third ensemble. These new bells, in addition to our current bells, are also used in general music instruction for all students in grades 3, 4 and 5 at our school. By increasing the number of bells that we have available for student use, we will increase the number of opportunities all students will receive to play these instruments in the general music classes without having to continually wait for a turn.

Expected Outcome(s)

If funded, I will use the handbells both in general music classes and for our extracurricular handbell choirs. As a teacher, I will look at the success of the grant in the following two ways:

(1) I will assess the students in general music instruction and in extra-curricular ensembles based on these standards - MU.3.O.1.1, MU.3.O.1.2, MU.3.O.3.1, MU.3.S.2.1, MU.3.F.3.1, MU.4.C.2.2, MU.4.C.2.1

(2) Community performances that will utilize the new bell resources will include our Holiday Concert, district Winter Bell Festival, Spring Showcase, Rock & Ring Concert, District Fine Arts Festival, and other community performances where our students are invited to perform.

Detailed Cost Summary

Bells are a beautiful instrument that can make a great clear tone. If granted, we will get 7 bells and two carrying case. The bells will last for years to come so this is a long term investment in students and music alike.
