We will use the metal rings and the index cards for students at each grade level (K-5) to create a running set of vocabulary words. The students will record the word, the definition, synonyms, antonyms, and a quick sketch on each card and then add it to his/her personal vocabulary ring.

The rings will be passed to the grade level above each year so that the students can continue to grow their vocabularies throughout their entire K-5 education and see how many words they have learned.

Project Goal

We will use the metal rings and the index cards for students at each grade level (K-5) to create a running set of vocabulary words. The students will record the word, the definition, synonyms, antonyms, and a quick sketch on each card and then add it to his/her personal vocabulary ring.

How Project Benefits Students

"Vocabulary is the best single indicator of intellectual ability and an accurate predictor of success at school." -- W.B. Elley
We want to give the students tools to learn new words along with the motivation to do so. The excitement of adding new words to their personal rings will motivate our students to grow their vocabularies. Carrying the rings throughout their entire K-5 education will give them a sense of pride when they see all of the words they have learned. Finally, repeated exposure to the vocabulary words will help cement the meanings of the words in their minds for a lifetime.

Expected Outcome(s)

We have 35 classroom teachers and 719 students who will benefit from this project. Our expectation is for our students' reading abilities to grow exponentially by using this strategy for learning and retaining new vocabulary.
