Reading is so much more than sounding out one word after another. A good book can open up a new world for young readers and open their minds to new ideas and new way of life. My goal is to prepare students to do their best on the FSA testing. The first step is reading great books to analyse both for comprehension and structure, followed by questions and techniques used on FSA. I have come up with a list of books that accomplish all of the above.

Project Goal

Reading is so much more than sounding out one word after another. A good book can open up a new world for young readers and open their minds to new ideas and new way of life. My goal is to prepare students to do their best on the FSA testing. The first step is reading great books to analyse both for comprehension and structure, followed by questions and techniques used on FSA. I have come up with a list of books that accomplish all of the above.

How Project Benefits Students

The titles requested are highly engaging for my reluctant readers. My students like to study the same titles as the rest of the class and engage in discussions surrounding the topics the literature provides.

The students benefit by having books that are current and engaging. The books are of interest to both boys and girls. The books chosen allow for students to understand particular elements of a story as taught by the standard LAFS.7.RL.1.3.

The students do individual projects based on characterization and theme. The students present their findings to the class and it offers us an opportunity to work on their presentation skills.

The biggest benefit to our students is preparation for the FSA testing. FSA testing will place students in appropriate Language Art and mandatory Reading classes the following year.

Expected Outcome(s)

My hope is that the students that are in the lower quadrant of the FSA scores are able to gain at least one full FSA point. Traditionally about 10% of students will make that gain. With these engaging books we hope that we will have 15% make the jump.
