I like my room buzzing with discussions on interesting books for novel study. During each quarter, I place four books of each of the titles I offer and ask my student to select a book. The four students that pick the same book are in a discussion group. I have six periods participate so in all we need multiple copies of each title. Since students take those books home, some get lost and some get overly loved. Our Language Art department has identified the need for the titles in this grant and if awarded, look forward to lively debate in the classroom.

Project Goal

I like my room buzzing with discussions on interesting books for novel study. During each quarter, I place four books of each of the titles I offer and ask my student to select a book. The four students that pick the same book are in a discussion group. I have six periods participate so in all we need multiple copies of each title. Since students take those books home, some get lost and some get overly loved. Our Language Art department has identified the need for the titles in this grant and if awarded, look forward to lively debate in the classroom.

How Project Benefits Students

My students follow the curriculum of the Sunshine state standards which includes LAFS.7.RL.1.3. The standard is used to teach students analyze how particular element of a story or drama interact.

It is important for students to connect to a story and as such we place great care in deciding what titles we offer our students. We select titles that may reflect their social surroundings, family situation and true to life situations.

I approach the teaching by offering a novel study for the whole class of a particular book and in this case it is Paper Towns. The book is current and the subject matter fits within our curriculum. We also offer novel group study. I would like to offer 9 additional titles, 4 of the same book, to each of our 4 periods. The student do both an individual and a group project based on the title selected.

Expected Outcome(s)

The expected outcome for my students is to perform their best on the FSA testing. I do that by carefully preparing them during class through both class title study and the group novel study. I offer questions and projects that are aligned with FSA and Sunshine State standards.

I expect my honor students to make reading gains of 10-20 points over the course of the year. If awarded a partial grant, I would select fewer copies but same titles to offer variety in highly engaging reading.

Detailed Cost Summary

This grant contains literature that is highly engaging for honor students in 7th grade in Language Arts Advanced Honors. The titles have been purposely selected based on the themes and how well they fit into teaching the standards.
