Project Goal

My goal for this grant is to provide my students with STEM activities such as laptops, robotics, Legos, K'nex, and other building materials to enhance our regular science, math, and technology curriculum.

How Project Benefits Students

The materials provided through this grant will allow for opportunities to learn beyond what is provided in the traditional classroom through books and teacher instruction. Students will be able to arrive every morning and begin working on a project that enhances their learning and totally engages them. Students can choose to build a working robot, construct a rollercoaster with K'nex, explore magnets by building a magnetic tower, create a electronic circuit, or anything else their brain can imagine. They can also go on a laptop and plan and explore their designs or create something using coding on a program like Scratch. It will make them excited to come to school to get started and forget what might have happened at home last night. In addition to using these materials as a morning activity, I will also be using it to bring their science and math standards to life as I see opportunities. I will be able to allow them to experience gravity, electrical energy, the scientific process, patterns, and so much more. For those students who are ready to go beyond the average learning, these materials will also provide them with enrichment opportunities as well.

Expected Outcome(s)

I teach 40 students in a 3rd grade in a Title 1 school. Many of our students have limited experiences in visiting science centers, owning expensive toys that challenge their problem-solving, and using technology. By providing my students with laptops, robotics, and STEM building materials such as K'nex, Legos, and beyond, I am able to provide them with experiences right in our own classroom that they would never be able to experience. I am able to guide them as they learn to become planners, builders, explorers, and problem-solvers. Students will be excited to come to school and will be more engaged in their learning. They will be able to use what they are reading about and being taught and bring their learning to life! The materials will also effect my future students as well. I just read that the average teacher touches over 3,000 lives!
