Project Goal

I would love for my class and the pre-k class to have the ability to watch the life cycle of a butterfly as well as having a classroom fish and ladybugs. This hands on experience will be wonderful and exciting for them.

How Project Benefits Students

The students will have the opportunity to watch a complete butterfly life cycle as part of our living things unit of study. They will learn to care for the caterpillars and butterflies by feeding them and finally releasing them into our butterfly garden. We will also have literature to support our living things unit of study so that they may learn about other life cycles. Our spring science unit is all about living things. This will allow the children a hand on lesson about the life cycle. We will begin right after spring break with the arrival of the caterpillars. The whole process usually takes a few weeks. The class fish will stay with us as long as possible and the ladybugs will be kept for one month.

Expected Outcome(s)

Students will have a hands on experience with life science. They will learn, understand, comprehend, and share their knowledge of the life cycle of a butterfly. The students will learn how to care for, feed, and keep clean a fish and fish take. They will also be responsible for feeding the lady beetles. My class of 18 as well as the 18 pre-k students will all enjoy this experience. At least four educators will help with project but I plan to share this experience with whoever wishes to come out to the butterfly release party and picnic!
