Superintendent Jeff Eakins has publicly stated he would like to see teachers receive focused cultural sensitivity training prior to the start of the 2019-2020 school year, just as principals and assistant principals received last summer. However, an even more basic problem is that children need to become more mindful and sensitive to their own and each other’s needs whether those needs arise culturally or developmentally. I teach 5th grade science and I want to incorporate standard HE.5.B.4.1 into my lesson which states “Illustrate techniques of effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills to enhance health”. Students are barraged at school with noise, tasks and expectations which often creates anxiety and makes them less sensitive to the needs of others setting off conflict and arguments. Yet until they learn how to calm, students will be unable to focus on their own and other’s needs.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 50

We started doing this project before the grant was awarded. My students have been learning about mindfulness: how to take a couple of minutes to just be calm and meditate. They have asked to take a couple of minutes as a whole class to meditate without my prompting!

My students were super excited to make the glitter jars. Many of them said they were going to take them home to use for relaxation. Because we just received many of the supplies within the last couple of weeks, we haven't had a chance to really evaluate the program. However, I am planning on having my students learn a little yoga this week, using the yoga mats, so they can pull them out when needed next year, as I have the same students again next year.

We will use the cameras and literature during times I specifically set aside for this project during the next school year.

Original Grant Overview

Project Goal

How Project Benefits Students

I want to take my students on a quiet nature walk through our outdoor garden with cameras and have them take pictures of things that they find calming, print those pictures out on a printer and hang up as a reminder to think calm thoughts. I would like them to make a mind jar using glitter to show how angry thoughts (represented by glitter) calm down with time. I would like to have books that cover the subject of relaxation techniques, kindness, calmness and mindfulness. Methods of relaxation will be discussed incorporating the cultures these techniques arose from. I will then have them assess what makes them angry, how they feel when others are hurtful and how they think others feel when they are hurtful. Learning that they are in control of how they are affected by words will enhance their health. Understanding that unless they let someone else’s words affect them, others words mean nothing. Also understanding the impact of integrating calming images and mental pictures of elements that make them relax will allow them to be in a better place to accept others.

I want my students to become peacemakers with tools at their disposal to learn how to effectively feel better using verbal and nonverbal communication. I want to take a few minutes each month when we are working outside to walk and learn to enjoy the calming effects of nature and think positive thoughts. This project will incorporate a culture of kindness by understanding we are all different yet all the same through discussion and literacy. A set of books available to them to practice different ways to meditate and go into yoga poses will offer positive coping skills in times of stress. By offering multiple methods of imagery, yoga, exercise (walking) the students will come to realize they do not have to rely on just one method to unwind, but have options. A school is meant to educate a student for life not just produce grades. By learning to control ones verbal and non-verbal responses, it will not only enhance the students health but also produce better citizenship.

I usually teach students how to be mindful of each other and relax by mentoring and indirect demonstration. However, there is a real need to create a more peaceful environment for students to optimize learning. Different students learn better by different pedagogy so approaching this standard in a three prong methodology 1) nature walks, 2) classroom literacy and 3) relaxation techniques it is expected more students will integrate the learning.
The students will take ownership of their learning walking and working in pairs, individually meditating and reading and then integrating the standard. These students will take ownership of the lessons by their participation. When the students are vested in learning, they are engaged and open to integrating the knowledge. Peacemakers/Mindfulness introduces the students to themselves in a social context. The students can take the learning to the outside world and use the skills to improve their life and their health.

Expected Outcome(s)

I will assess the lesson plan in three parts: the attentiveness and state of students during our walks, the use of the literature and yoga mats and the classroom demeanor. As an educator I will answer the following questions:
1. Did the lesson plan meet the objective of the taking an idea and teaching to a standard?
The idea is the Peacemakers/Mindfulness and the standard I am teaching to is HE.5.B.4.1.
2. Are students actively participating in their learning?
A) During the nature walks, I will assess the students based on engagement, focus and output of the images. I will make visual observation during the walk to assess the first two items and the actual pictures for the third. My objective for this section is to create an environment of calm and a willingness to individualize this environment.
B) During the class sessions, I will assess the students individual learning. This will be done by observing if they are scanning through literature, using the relaxation techniques and verbally responding to questions requiring absorption of literature points and comparative thinking.
C) During the month following, I will assess the student’s ability to gather data from the literature, create glitter jars and photos, and care for themselves and others.
3. Would I make any changes this lesson plan based on my visual observations?
4. Would I choose different books for Peacemakers/Mindfulness?
5. What were the greatest challenges in the Peacemakers/Mindfulness sessions?
6. Would I do anything different next time?
