Project Goal

The goal of the project is to provide gifted students access to a quiet corner where they can work independently if they already got the concepts in a class and need enhanced learning. The grant request includes a study carrel, a laptop/computer and a task chair.

How Project Benefits Students

In today's landscape with a diverse classroom the focus on differentiated instruction is in the forefront. I want to create opportunities for my students whose needs would be better met through electronic stimulation to further enhance or deepen their understanding of the subject. With highly motivated learners a quiet corner in the classroom will support their learning style and/or needs. In the past, I have used a reading corner but with the push for STEM activities this will provide more options.

Having a classroom computer will help me reinforce 6th grade standards such as making observations, data gathering, and making conclusions (Example SC.6.N.1.1). Students could gather their own data on a particular Big Idea and make their own observations.

Expected Outcome(s)

My population of students is made up of many ELL who may be able to speak the language however reading & comprehending it can be difficult so visuals are very important in understanding the Big Idea. Having the laptop/computer in a corner of my classroom could also be used as a reward system for those students who may not be performing well and it can be used as an outlet. Many of my students are also from low SES backgrounds and could benefit from access to a computer that they do not have at home.

Students are evaluated in many ways such as the common assessments that the county requires as well as my own forms of assessment which can be project based. The assessments will help me show how having a study corner will increase the test scores for students who need computers for easier learning.
