The students come from a wide array of backgrounds. The school has 51% economically disadvantaged rate and 66% minority rate. The school has a diverse population of students.
University of South Florida (USF) is close to our school and many USF faculty and staff families attend our school. The families move into the area as a result of professional job opportunities making the school more diverse including academic diversity and expectation towards the collections the library needs to carry. The school wants to meet those expectations and grow as the community grows. As a media specialist my job is to prepare the students for life. There is a growing interest amongst students to read more graphic novels. I want to meet that need by providing current and exciting selection of graphic novels that span different genre of books, including chapter books, series, biographies and fiction. This grant would enable the school to provide relevant materials for students to get in depth knowledge on the subjects. The skills students learn through books are transferable and stresses the understanding of culture and generations. Through books, students individual character has the opportunity to shine.

I took over the school library less than 2 years ago. The library has 6,208 total number of books for 1,100 students. Out of those books, around 150 are graphic novel books. Many of those graphic novel books are older novels like Skip beat series that came out in 2006 and those books that simply have not fallen apart due to use are still being checked out. An example of how the library has not been able to keep up, the library only has Skip beat up to book 19 that was published in 2009 but the series is now up to book 40. Graphic novels are one of the most popular section of the library with average checkout of graphic novels around 35-45 novels each day. I would like to use the interest in graphic novels to expand students horizon. Would the book Poe stories and poems increase interest in poetry for example?

How Project Benefits Students

As a media specialist my mission is to interest students in books in increasingly digital age. We have around 150 graphic novels with average checkout of 35-45 novels a day. The shelf is always picked through every day. The students would really like to continue with all books in their favorite manga series but the library only has a few in some series and it is heartbreaking not to be able to provide books requested. Manga is however not the only thing graphic novels have to offer. I would like to offer books on diversity and adjusting to school setting like El Deafo and Ghosts. Poetry can be taught through books like Poe stories and poems. Students can pick up the graphic novel of Wrinkle in Time before seeing the movie. It can be a gateway novel - pickup Hobbit as a graphic novel and see if it interest the student to read the full novel. We would like to connect what the students read with what their parents might know to spark conversation with graphic novels like Sherlock Holmes. Our budding artists read graphic novels not only for the content but the artwork. I will have so much fun with these books and it provides me with the tools I need to improve library selections.

Expected Outcome(s)

As a media specialist I will evaluate the success of this grant both visually and through checkout of books in the graphic novel section. We have around 150 graphic novels with average checkout of 35-45 novels a day currently and I anticipate those numbers to go up drastically as the new titles come in.
