Provide a reading unit that can be enjoyed outside in an engaging environment that encourages
students to explore and discover nature as they read with captivating text that is tailored to their
reading level. I want to increase student motivation to read by allowing them to stretch their legs outside while listening to an audiobook and following along with a written text.

Project Goal

Provide a reading unit that can be enjoyed outside in an engaging environment that encourages
students to explore and discover nature as they read with captivating text that is tailored to their
reading level. I want to increase student motivation to read by allowing them to stretch their legs outside while listening to an audiobook and following along with a written text.

How Project Benefits Students

Which team are you on, plants or zombies? I teach reluctant readers in 8th grade and I pride
myself on bringing the best out of them by keeping things fresh yet disciplined. If I am selected
to receive a grant, I am going to do a unit of reading and collaborative discussion with the theme plants vs. zombies. The big idea around the standard, LAFS.8.SL.1.1, is can my students
survive if there is a zombie apocalypse and then how? Do you know how to identify edible
mushrooms and defend yourself from zombies? Who would be in charge of what? How does an
astronaut survival kit differ from a zombie survival kit? So many questions that can only be
answered by awesome books that are relatable, imaginative and fun.

Our innovative idea in this unit is to be able to display books of interest to the students and take
the reading lesson outside to our outside classroom, enjoy the Florida weather and surrounding environment. A plants vs. animals unit in the inspiring outdoors! I want to offer the reading material in a fresh air adventure to interest reluctant readers in material they might have rejected previously. We will host a reading marathon with books at the interest level of middle
school students and discuss the survival point of view of the book they read. We will have
wildflowers planted for the students to enjoy. The plants have all been picked for the theme of
our outdoor garden of water conservation and Florida native wildlife, including butterflies.

If granted, I will have a blue bookshelf on wheels that I can move to our outdoor classroom for a
sunny lesson in reading. I will have a book display where I can showcase books which students
tend to be drawn to with a simple theme - plants vs. zombies. It allows the unit to work cross
curriculum by covering not only reading but also life science through non-fiction books on plants.

First week of the unit, I will take the students outside with the book Last Kids on Earth, along
with a bluetooth speaker and an audio book for guided reading. Over the course of three days,
the class will read the same book outside. I will follow up with classroom discussion on the book
and an introduction to our independent reading on plants vs. zombies. The remaining time of the
unit we will wheel our bookcase to our outside classroom and the students will engage with
various books on the same topic, then transition to discussion about different viewpoints the
students learned by reading various materials.

Expected Outcome(s)

While teaching the unit I will observe and interact with students to gauge their reading interest
and intensity. I will monitor if the students are participating in text-based discussions and have
read different books on the topic and can reflect based on their reading.

Over the course of a year my goal as an educator is to raise students' FSA scores by an average of 15-20%. Based on previous FSA performance in my classes, I anticipate that up to 75 percent of students in each period will be able to raise their FSA scores enough to make a reading gain. Teaching this unit can contribute to even higher scores if unreached readers are
captivated.

Detailed Cost Summary

The books will serve my classroom for years to come so if you assume there are up to 30 students in the class at each of the 6 periods and the books last 5 years, it would serve over
900 students in all! The books and materials will allow me to engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussion. My hope is that the students not only take away the required knowledge but that the books also ignite passion for reading.

I have included an outside fan, bookcase on wheels and bluetooth speaker so I can take the lesson outside. Students spend way too much time indoors in Florida and these items allow me
to move a unit centered on plants and zombies to a fitting natural backdrop and enjoy flowers, fresh air and a bit of sunshine.
