Goal

To provide abundant opportunities for our transitioning adult students to gain vital independent life skills through exploring vocational opportunities from August to May through Community Based Instruction (CBI). Students will practice communication and social skills by ordering at restaurants, buying event tickets, and exchanging money. Students will strengthen vocabulary development, social, exploration, advocacy and self-determination skills as well.

What will be done with my students

Students will access the community on a weekly basis to practice essential life and social skills that have been taught in the classroom. This allows the students to have continuous hands on life and social skills practiced in real life situations with a teachers guidance.

Benefits to my students

Financial restraints limit many of our TAP students from being able to afford weekly CBI outings. Providing a CBI grant will increase our students confidence while in the community and they will be proud to represent Nassau County District Schools in our community. Confidence in the community will also cross over into confidence in the area of life and employability skills.

Budget Narrative

Our program does not have the funding available to cover the cost of these meaningful CBI trips within the community. To help offset the costs, the TAP classes have a school based enterprise where students create products to sell to raise money to help pay for these community activities, however it doesn't cover nearly enough. In addition, families contribute each month, but because of the socio-economic dynamics of our classes, the grant provides a much needed supplement of funding.
The students appreciate your willingness to help fund these activities and hope you will consider funding TAP again this year.
