Goal

To provide students with opportunities out in the community to practice social, communication, money, and time skills, learn new vocabulary, and practice problem-solving and decision-making skills in real life situations. Empowering them to overcome challenges and navigate various community settings with confidence.

What will be done with my students

Each month, August through May, students will have the opportunity to utilize community settings to teach practical, life skills such as ordering food at different restaurants, ordering a ticket at a movie theater, using public restrooms, shopping at different stores and other entertaining venues and yet educational for our students. Prior to going on these outings, the teachers and Speech Language Pathologist will role play the appropriate skills i.e. communication, vocabulary and behavioral expectations. These skills are necessary for independence within our communities.

Benefits to my students

Community involvement is vital for the development of self-confidence, motivation, independence, communication and increases self-esteem for our students with special needs. These outings focus and support the "abilities" of our students and redirect the challenges as we role play and practice prior to going out. With the ongoing community experiences, our students will become contributing, independent citizens. Twenty two students, 7 teachers and one Speech Language Pathologist will be going on these community based instruction trips.

Budget Narrative

Thank you for considering our program for this grant. However vital these skills are for our students, the program is unable to cover the cost for these social, learning, growing, community experiences that are a component of our educational program at Yulee High School. We can provide the transportation and fuel to these sites. The 5.45 cost per student will cover meals and other activities with a reduction that comes from the generosity of the businesses we plan to visit or the supplement given from our parents.
