Goal
Welcome to the Math Market! Come on in and shop our selection of delicious foods! I teach the standard MA.4.NSO.2.7: Explore the addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers with decimals to the
hundredths. The goal of this grant is provide students with an engaging and real world opportunity to add and subtract numbers with decimals.
What will be done with my students
My math class works hard at not only trying to understand the "why" of math concepts, but also how our math concepts relate to the real world. We add and subtract with decimals all the time when we go shopping and I want to bring this experience to my classroom for my students. The material I am requesting through this grant include a variety of play foods and manipulative money to create a Math Market. Students would have an opportunity to shop for different foods, add to find the total cost of all their food, subtract any discounts or coupons, pay with manipulative money, and receive change.
Benefits to my students
My students had a very difficult time adding and subtracting decimals this year, especially when it came to subtracting across zeros. The Math Market will take place at the end of the addition and subtraction with decimals unit. If awarded, my goal is to see an increase in motivation and mastery of this concept. I will be able to see an increase of scores through our math QMT's and iReady data.
