Goal
The goal of this grant is for my students to see the conductor (drum major) clearly to keep up with the tempo [MU.912.S.3.5 - Develop and demonstrate proper vocal or instrumental technique.]. Conducting a marching band means leading the band while marching, keeping track of time, and directing when and what to play through verbal communication or hand gestures. My drum major climbs up on a podium hundreds of times to conduct the marching band. It is important to have the right podium for safety, assembly and size.
We have one fully working podium currently, while having two drum majors, and two that are broken or missing pieces. Our working podium is only four feet high, making it difficult for our students to see our drum major from the other side of the field. The other is a larger podium which is a 6 foot command center podium, but it does not fold up due to being rusted in the rain over the years since there is no storage space for it, therefore we constantly need to ask to borrow a podium from other schools whenever visiting for football games or traveling away for competitions. Our last podium has missing screws and handrails, and we've not been able to utilize it efficiently this year.
With the 72'' podium, we'd be able to efficiently store it, travel with it, and have the security of the handrails.
What will be done with my students
Every year a new drum major is interviewed and has to test their skills by conducting the marching band. Becoming a drum major is a huge honor and requires a lot of hard work. The drum major has to be off the ground so the marching band has a clear sight of the drum major conducting the marching band. Standing off the ground in front of your peers can be intimidating. Durable and stable podium is important for the safety and security of the drum major. The podium in this grant is 72” with a side rail for the security of our conductor. These podiums last for many years. It is easy to set up and assemble which is important since we move the podium to and from the parking lot twice a week to practice marching.
If the marching band were not able to have a clear line of sight to the conductor, the music could get sloppy.
Benefits to my students
With a good podium, our drum major can command the marching band as required by standard MU.912.S.3.5 and the band can follow clear instructions to sound the best they can.
