Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

My goal is to help students fall in love with reading. I teach ELA to first graders. I have students of all different abilities and levels. I have autistic students, SLD students, and high achieving students. All of my students are unique individuals. I would love for each and every one of them to love reading time. Sitting at a desk all day can make for a very boring learning environment. I want to create a space where students can choose where they sit and how they sit that is most comfortable for them to help keep them engaged in reading or writing.

Goal

My goal is to help students fall in love with reading. I teach ELA to first graders. I have students of all different abilities and levels. I have autistic students, SLD students, and high achieving students. All of my students are unique individuals. I would love for each and every one of them to love reading time. Sitting at a desk all day can make for a very boring learning environment. I want to create a space where students can choose where they sit and how they sit that is most comfortable for them to help keep them engaged in reading or writing.

What will be done with my students

Students will be more engaged in the learning if they feel comfortable in their seats. Allowing movements while still learning will encourage all learning types to be at their best.
If students are able to leave their seat and read in a beanbag chair or a swivel chair or a cushion on the carpet, this will encourage students to want to go to reading time and enjoy the experience so much more that reading at their desk in a hard plastic chair that they have already been sitting in all day.

Benefits to my students

By creating space where students can work in different way, this best fits each learner. This also encourages them to want to do more. (ex: read longer, write more, focus longer) Fostering a love of reading at a young age encourages learners for life. Every child has the ability to love learning. As teachers we just have to find and encourage learning in different ways to benefit each student.
These items would be used for years to come and encouraging a love of reading for years to come in my classroom.
