Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

“We are striving to forge a union with purpose,
to compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters, and
conditions of man.” - Amanda Gorman

Young people like my middle school students are the voices of the next generation. The Florida Sunshine state standard ELA.8.R.1.4 addresses the poetic literary art form by asking the students to Analyze structure, sound, imagery, and figurative language in poetry. Poetry has been hidden in plain sight for a long time. It helps express images and emotions in different formats.

The goal of this grant is to provide an engaging, high interest display of books containing poems my students gravitate to check out and additional books to replenish the display. The display will be used during April’s poetry month, during the lesson plan for the sunshine standard and selected books will be used during other months such as black history month, Hispanic heritage month and women’s history month. The books cover anything and everything from girl power, embracing your inheritance, encouraging changes in the world and believing in yourself.

What will be done with my students

April is the national poetry month. The media center celebrates by providing a display of books that showcases different aspects of poetry to invoke interest in the pure charm of poetry. Poetry is created in all cultures and therefore has various different formats such as free verse poems and haikus.

The books represent different aspects of world culture. Poems are filled with unique details of the world my students live in. Some are a collection of poems from over 68 countries, some represent up and coming artists, some touch on hard subjects such as immigration. What those books all have in common is to introduce young minds to diversity and inspire them to express their feelings through poetry.

The media center is a hub for students and teachers to come and cover lessons for example for covering poetic literacy in 8th grade Language Arts standard. These books will come in handy for years to come.

Benefits to my students

The expected outcome is an engaging display of poetry that creates thought provoking questions about the place poetry has as a written literacy art form. The books are of high interest to middle school students and will increase the circulation of poetry by 10%.
