Goal
This project will help the teachers and students of Palm River develop calming strategies and techniques which will build their self awareness and decrease disruptive classroom behaviors.
What will be done with my students
Research has shown that schools with calming rooms have improved in student behaviors because students were provided a safe and familiar place to soothe and de-escalate. Calming rooms also provide students with a least restrictive environment for them to calm as opposed to classroom where they are confined to a small area of the classroom to release their frustration or being over whelmed by their senses.
Students also benefit from calming rooms by increasing their concentration, gaining sensory improvement, gaining de-escalation techniques (e.g. yoga, breathing strategies, etc.), improving social exchanges (i.e. understanding cause-effect relationships).
Benefits to my students
Classroom teachers and behavior support will work together to decrease the amount of phone calls about student behavior to administration by fifty percent by providing students and teachers with techniques and strategies to diffuse the situation.
