Goal

Sumner High School is building a Ceramics program and our goal is to be able to purchase a pottery wheel so that we can offer wheel-throwing for our students! 

What will be done with my students

We offer annual Ceramics classes and we hope to provide each student with the opportunity to learn and practice pottery throwing several times over the course of the year. Providing opportunities for students to be involved in Art has been proven to help students develop a growth mindset, as well as improve their cognition, self-confidence, and communication. Specifically, throwing on a pottery wheel is an mindful activity that connects the brain and the entire body and helps students be fully present and in the moment.  

Benefits to my students

This grant will allow us to purchase a pottery wheel and bats. The addition of a pottery wheel to our ceramics program will allow students to create professional, delicate, and nuanced forms on the wheel, in addition to their hand built projects. We anticipate this project to reach up to 200 students in the Ceramics classroom this year, and to continue to reach large numbers of students for years to come!!  

Budget Narrative

These items are a pottery wheel and bats from Blick. The wheel is where the piece is thrown, and the detachable plastic bats provide a surface on which student work can dry, without the risk of damaging the form in taking it off the wheel.
