Goal

Open to all students in grades 6-8, the goal of this club is to target our students with high referral and infraction rates and those that specifically struggle with interpersonal relationships with peers to reduce those behavioral concerns and dramatically increase their skills in knowing how to not just get along with but CHEER for others, supporting and encouraging their successes along the way.

What will be done with my students

This club is disguised as a Dance Team to perform at half time. However, much of our time in practice will be in developing skills needed to have positive peer relationships. Each practice will begin with a "Circle Up" in which the girls share both victories and struggles from this week. Victories will be met with applause (drum beat on the floor) and struggles met with encouragement from their fellow team members.

Additionally, we will have a "Big Sister, Little Sister" format in which older students (grade 7 and 8) are paired with our 6th grade students. Twice a month, the Big Sister will be responsible for adding encouragement to the day of their assigned Little Sister. This can be with a plan to eat lunch together, a note delivered to the student via the homeroom teacher, or maybe a quick check in just about how the Little Sister is doing. Being mindful of someone else to help support and encourage will increase their own efficacy and help them know what it means to care for others.

Finally, each dance will be comprised of 3 eight counts created by small teams. Each team of 3 students will work together to design a piece of a finished dance. When the dance is complete, it will be a compilation of all the girls' efforts, helping them understand that everyone is valuable and has something to contribute.

Benefits to my students

The benefits to my students are an immediate decrease in behavioral issues through the learning of skills associated with positive peer relationships. Additionally, many of these students have a history or trauma, so helping them understand what it means to be cared for and what it means to take care of others can be very therapeutic for these students.

Budget Narrative

Many of my students that most need this are also low income. I would love to be able to provide uniforms for my students so money is not a factor to not be able to participate. Our school has not done anything like this before, so there are no previous uniforms we could use.
