Goal
I am a principal and my students range in age from six to eleven years old. Approximately 68% of my students are African American, 5% white, and 27% Hispanic. These students are economically disadvantaged and some have experienced trauma. Some of my students do not understand how their trauma impacts their brain development and social interactions. My job is not only to teach the students how to read, but also to empower them to become productive citizens.
What will be done with my students
Teaching about mental health awareness is important for our young learners. Some of our students have difficulty managing their stress and going into a calm state. It is my hope that the items donated in this grant will assist my teachers with helping our students go into a relaxed state of mind. The items will support them with learning how to communicate feelings of anxiety, stress, or depression. Developing this mental health awareness will enable our students to focus on their academic subjects without additional stressors.
Benefits to my students
My project will support teachers with implementing evidence- based mental health awareness. Often times students are not taught about mental health and it impacts them on a daily basis.
The materials I have selected will make it easy for a teacher to implement quick mental health strategies that are culturally and developmentally appropriate. This will allow my scholars to become self aware ultimately helping them respond to their own mental health issues.
