Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal is to put creative and critical thinking tools that foster a STEM and 21st thinking skills in the hands of all students across the school. It is important to immerse students in the world of STEM, through creating a climate that encourages and activates students critical thinking skills and ability to independent solve real world problems.

Two mobile STEM labs is the ultimate goal, where students across the school, ranging from grade 1-5, interact and apply STEM thinking to their learning and beyond. The mobile labs, which will be located in the library (also known as The Hub) can be checked out by teachers and used in before and after school situations, contain a variety of critical thinking tasks, games, building materials, and response cards in order to connect everyday learning to the STEM world.

Students will have many opportunities to learn and explore areas of direct STEM interest including jobs, skills, and subjects. They will have opportunities to work individually in and small groups (as appropriate to covid guidelines) with logic games, builders, questioning skills, and many other hands on materials to challenge student thinking.

The mobile stem carts will be used for explicite instruction from the Media Specialist (that's me!!) and to be checked out by teachers either as a whole cart or individual items for small group instruction.

What will be done with my students

Prior to jumping into specific creative and critical thinking challenges and games, students will learn and practice their critical thinking skills. This is an important aspect of being a successful problem solver. They will work on logic puzzles such as Rush Hour and Q-bitz while also bringing in the math component with a variety of math challenges. STEM thinking involves all subject areas and the use of both sides of the brain. Problem solving games increase student perseverance when things get tough and build their out of the box thinking. Creative thinkers bring new ideas to the field of STEM and that will be highly focused on during this school year. In addition to working directly with games and challenges, students will be participating in monthly STEM challenges geared towards a specific concept. Challenges will include how to build a bridge through trees, learning all about roller coasters, and bring other real world problems to life. Students will get as much hands-on problem solving that is possible within the school day!

Benefits to my students

Students will gain and have a deeper understanding of concepts that affect the real world. Giving students a variety of STEM activities and creative and critical thinking challenges, based on their interests will engage them in many different ways. This will give students a positive outlook on school, science, math, technology, and engineering while guiding them into their future jobs and careers.

Describe the Students

At Elisa Nelson Elementary we work with two different subgroups of students: Gifted Learners and Dyslexic Students. Although these students are stereotypically seen on different ends of the spectrum they both love to learn and want to be challenged in an way that is engaging and relevant to them. They want the fun of learning! These materials would be used school wide and we currently serve 450 student. Out students here are absolutely AMAZING! They are kind, curious, and willing to learn. They love to experiment and get hands on with learning! I only want to provide many more of these opportunities. The students & teachers would appreciate and be thankful for any donations and materials that allow them to have fun while learning.
