Goal

To create a safe, calming space that offers sensory solutions to help students self regulate while supporting social/emotional development and well being in the school setting.

What will be done with my students

Students will be provided with a simple, structured approach to utilizing sensory interventions to reduce negative behaviors and increase positive behaviors in a quantifiable manner. Through sensory rich activities, students will be taught strategies to offset the sensory seeking behaviors before they occur, thereby decreasing the disruptive behaviors during classroom instruction. By decreasing disruptions during the school day, overall student achievement will be impacted in a positive way. Students displaying an identified need for an increase in their sensory diet will be provided with therapeutic activities to channel their energy and teach self regulation.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of this implementation will be felt school wide at Sunset Hills. Students and faculty will notice a decrease in campus disruptions created by those students requiring additional sensory input throughout the day. Current data reflects 17-19 campus disruptions daily due to sensory deficits. By implementing a sensory room and teaching self regulation, disruptions will decrease to less than 5 incidents daily as tracked by daily behavioral data collection.
