Goal

Our goal is to introduce second grade students to the wonderful world of geology through rocks. We want to provide a hands-on, inquiry based approach to learning.

What will be done with my students

Students will become “Rock Rangers” as they investigate rocks. As we begin our unit, each student will hypothesize “What is a rock?” and “How are rocks formed?” Students will work in teams as geologists using magnifiers to observe rocks, discussing their observations. This will lead us into the discussion of rock properties and how people use rocks. With this hands-on lab, students will be able to record their observations and draw conclusions through their investigations. Students can test their hypotheses with respect to color, luster, streak, hardness, and cleavage. They will be challenged to describe and compare the physical characteristics of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks and how they are formed. These labs will be infused with literature about rocks such as, Everybody Needs A Rock, Remarkable Rocks, and Let’s Go Rock Collecting. Discovery Education will also be used as a resource to provide a deeper understanding.

Benefits to my students

The students’ investigations will be the stepping stone to understanding the layers of the Earth. In addition, students will be able to explain the importance of rocks and how people use rocks in everyday life. Students will be more “engaged” with a hands-on approach to Geology.
