For my students to be successful, they need access to lots of books. My program goal is to create a balanced literacy program within my classroom. My classroom library would include:

� A core collection of 300-600 books with new books added routinely to spark interest and old, worn books discarded periodically as needed.
� Books in a wide variety of formats including graphic novels, series books, hardcovers, and paperbacks.
� Both fiction and nonfiction books that are high interest for students.
� Current books � 30% of the books should have been published within the last five years.
� Books from a wide range of genres.
� Multicultural books.
� Books spanning two grade levels above and below the designated classroom grade level.
� Materials other than books that include, but aren�t limited to, magazines, newspapers, comic books, and audio books.

The purpose of the classroom library is to create a community of readers. �Students who say they read more typically have superior literacy development. And school programs in which children select their own reading material for at least a year�and are not tested on what they have read�have been shown to be consistently superior to skill-oriented programs in literacy development� (Krashen, Stephen. "Bridging Inequality with Books." Educational Leadership 55.4 (1997): 18-22. Educational Leadership. Web. 16 May 2014). I will make the initial book purchases before school starts, but starting in the second quarter the students will be asked to identify new texts that are high interest, readable, and will help to increase their knowledge as learners. Based on the students� suggestions, I will make regular book purchases once per quarter.

What will be done with my students

Children read more when they have access to interesting reading material. Children learn to read by reading. With a classroom library, the students will have access to reading material that is not required by the teacher. Students will be provided with independent reading time when they will be expected to be engaged with a book. Studies show that conversations about books enhance a student's motivation to read. Students will have the opportunity to talk about what they are reading through book talks and casual classroom conversations, with both their peers and me. My students will complete multiple reading assessments throughout the course of the school year to measure the growth in their skills. 

 

Benefits to my students

Research shows that students in classrooms with high-quality classroom libraries read up to fifty percent more than students who do not have access to books in the classroom. The single most valuable activity for developing comprehension is the act of reading itself. The amount of reading that students do is shown to cause a growth in reading comprehension. Studies show that the amount of reading is a strong predictor of comprehension which outweighs intelligence, economic background, and gender.

A student's vocabulary growth is also heavily influenced by the amount and variety of reading material the student has access to. Students expand their vocabularies extensively by reading on their own; the more children read, the more their vocabularies grow. Children learn an average of 4,000 to 12,000 new words each year as a result of book reading. If a student reads a minimum of twenty minutes a day for an entire school year, they are exposed to approximately 1,800,000 words, compared to 8,000 words if all they read is one minute per day. 

 

Budget Narrative

I currently have approximately 125 books in my classroom library that I have purchased over the last four years. These titles will remain in my library, but certain novels will have to be replaced due to wear and tear. The $2,000 grant will allow me to build a stronger library. I will purchase books with my educator's discount from Barnes & Noble and will also search for discounts from websites like Amazon.com.

The $2,000 will be spent as follows:

� $1,500 on new books, including, but not limited to: high interest, young adult fiction (mystery, drama, romance, series, etc.), nonfiction, graphic novels and/or comic books.
� $200-300 on eBooks for my classroom set of Kindles for the students that prefer to read electronically.
� $50-100 on audio books that match novels in the classroom.

Any remaining balance will be used to make supplementary purchases as needed over the course of the school year.
